Refinery Hotel
Refinery Hotel ranks 6th in the list of the best hotels in NYC with free stuff. This is the place to stay if you want to experience Brooklyn (the brand) without ever leaving the island of Manhattan. The hotel, which was formerly a millinery factory, has charming industrial accents that give it a retro feel, like millinery tools hanging in the lobby and wooden floors in the rooms. A young crowd naturally gravitates toward it.
An influx of stylish 30-somethings in the evening can be seen in the lobby's adjacent Winnie's Jazz Lounge. The same holds true for guests at the hotel's Parker & Quinn restaurant and Refinery Rooftop rooftop bar. The hotel room (in this case, a truly spacious suite with a king bed, couch, and two flat-screen TVs) looks and perhaps even smells (sandalwood?) dramatically different from typical hotel rooms thanks to an exceptionally attentive concierge. The interior is sparsely furnished with the oak floors and furniture mentioned earlier, a tan couch, an enormous Art Deco lamp, and a painting on the wall that adds a moody pop of color.
Are you going out to eat or have a drink? Don't miss the Parker & Quinn's saucy Brussels sprouts (trust me, you've never had them like this), and go to Refinery Rooftop for a more rustic ambiance. The partygoers are protected from inclement weather by a retractable roof, while strings of lights strung from the ceiling create the atmosphere of a picnic after dark. Even though it's in the middle of Manhattan, this place is far from the raucous club scene that most New Yorkers steer clear of. Guests can relax in booths, chat by the bar, or take in the view of the skyline from the outside.
Once you've had your fill, put on the hotel's plush robe and slippers and take a long, deep breath before retiring to the dreamy bed. When you wake up, make sure to take a long shower that can accommodate two (or three) people before returning to a more rapid-paced reality. Howl at the Moon offers live music in a dive bar setting for a wild night out. Hit the dance floor, watch some of the city's underground musicians perform rousing renditions of your old favorites, and get your drinks brought to you by the bucket.
