Rogers Communications
Rogers Communications Inc. is a Canadian media and communications company operating primarily in the wireless communications, cable television, telephone and Internet sectors, with significant additional telecommunications and mass media assets. Rogers is headquartered in Toronto, Ontario. The company has its roots in 1925 when Edward S. Rogers Sr. founded the Rogers Vacuum Tube Company to sell battery-free radios, although the current business dates back to 1960, when Ted Rogers and a partner acquired CHFI-FM radio; they later became part owners of a group that founded the CFTO broadcaster.
The main competitor to Rogers is Bell Canada, which has a similarly extensive portfolio of radio and television media assets, as well as telephony, wireless and television distribution services, particularly in the East and Central Canada. The two companies are generally considered to have a monopoly on media services in their regions, and both companies own shares of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment. However, Rogers also competes nationally with Telus for wireless service, and primarily indirectly with Shaw Communications for television service.
