Romance Is a Bonus Book, the story revolves around Cha Eun-ho (Lee Jong-suk), a successful author and chief editor at a book publishing company, and Kang Dan-i (Lee Na-young), a mother who was previously a successful advertising copywriter. Kang Dan-i was injured while saving Cha Eun-ho from an accident when he was a child. Kang Dan-i asked Cha Eun-ho to assist her while she was recovering in the hospital and later on bed rest for a year. Cha Eun-ho became interested in writing after assisting her in obtaining books to read from the library. The two kids remained close friends well into adulthood. Their friendship was tested when Kang Dan-i began dating a selfish, inconsiderate man.

In the present, Cha Eun-ho asks Kang Dan-i to help him find a housekeeper. Kang Dan-i is the one who does the work and accepts payment. Her husband cheated on her, and she is now divorced and unemployed; however, he is also unaware of her living situation and the difficulties she is facing as a divorced single mother with a significant gap in work experience attempting to re-enter the professional world. Kang Dan-i is eventually unable to keep her secrets hidden from him, and Cha Eun-ho assists her. When Kang Dan-i applies to be a temporary task support worker at his publishing company, their lives become even more intertwined.
