Sam Hui
Sam Hui was raised in the city of Guangzhou - from the province of Guangdong in China. He came from a musical family and spent his childhood there. Since he was a young child, he was profoundly influenced by both the Chinese traditional music that his father liked to play, and the opera Chinese music that his mom sang.
It shouldn't come as a surprise that Hui was able to effectively merge traditional genres with Western pop, therefore inventing a new genre that is now recognized as Cantopop.
Hui sang his songs in both Cantonese and English. Earlier in his profession, he published songs in the United States and Britain; nevertheless, he attained his highest degree of fame in China by performing songs that resonated with the country's middle class. Hui was responsible for the composition of all of his music, and he often imbued it with political symbols and positive themes that continue to inspire audiences in this day and age.
Decades after his debut, Sam Hui still serves as a major influence both in his home country and around the world. That is why, though he releases music less frequently compared to the past, he still deserves a spot on this compilation list!
