She was born in part of communist Yugoslavia
In 1970, in Slovenia, Melanija Knavs gave birth to Melania Trump. Her "small industrial hometown," Sevnica, according to NBC, was a part of communist Yugoslavia. The 5,000-person hamlet has some resemblance to the American Rust Belt towns that supported Donald Trump in the election. The government-owned textile factory where Melania Trump's mother worked was one of the several Sevnica facilities that have closed.
2 million Slovenian residents gained independence from Yugoslavia at the fall of communism in 1991. Additionally, many locals in Sevnica are delighted that Melania Trump has been named the first lady of the United States as the city exits a period of heavy unemployment.
Donald Trump hasn't spent much time in Slovenia despite his jet-setting lifestyle. He has only ever been to Melania Trump's country of origin, according to The New Yorker. That trip happened in July 2002. It took a total of three hours to complete.
At that time, Donald and Melania Trump's Boeing 727 touched down at Ljubljana's Brnik airport. At the Grand Hotel Toplice on Lake Bled, they had dinner with Viktor and Amalija Knavs. The New Yorker reports that Trump has only visited Slovenia once, during his trip to Lake Bled.
