Shionogi is well-known in Japan as a producer of antimicrobials and antibiotics. Because of antibiotic resistance and the slow growth of the antibiotic market, it has partnered with US-based Schering-Plough (merged in 2009 with Merck & Co.) to become the only marketing agency for its drugs in Japan. Shionogi was an early investor in Ranbaxy Pharmaceuticals, an Indian generic manufacturer. In 2012, the company acquired a stake in ViiV Healthcare, a pharmaceutical firm focused on the development of HIV treatments.
