Sophia Genetics was established in 2011 as a startup at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) by Jurgi Camblong, Pierre Hutter, and Lars Steinmetz. Initially, it was used in nationally authorized healthcare laboratories and hospitals for research. The Sophia DDM Platform (Data-Driven Medicine) is an analytical software platform developed by the firm in 2014 that aids in the interpretation of circulating tumor DNA and circulating tumor cells in bodily fluids such as blood, urine, cerebrospinal fluid, and others.

Using machine learning and AI algorithms, the Sophia DDM Platform delivers genomic insights to clinicians and researchers from heterogeneous multimodal data sets in the cloud. All of the institutions on the platform exchange their insights with one another. This means that the AI improves in intelligence and precision as its user base grows. The technology has found application in the study of malignancies that run in families, metabolic disorders, pediatrics, cardiology, and rare diseases.
