The female lead and heroine of the first novel in the Castle Series is Sophie Hatter. The eldest of three sisters, Sophie is a young woman who resides in Market Chipping in the kingdom of Ingary. While her older sisters are out pursuing various vocations, she works as her stepmother Fanny Hatter's apprentice in her late father's hat shop.
Although Sophie Hatter comes out as timid and insecure at first, she shows that she has a strong sense of self after being cursed to age and loses her fear of what people will think of her. In addition to being obedient, courteous, and compassionate, Sophie also has a tendency to act rashly. She frequently feels bad when she makes a mistake, however, her attempts to fix it almost always end in failure.
Sophie Hatter is an extremely kind person who frequently attempts to assist others, regardless of who they are. She even went so far as to take the Witch of the Waste under her protection.
