St. Martinus University Faculty of Medicine
The last university on the list of the best universities in Curacao is St. Martinus University Faculty of Medicine (SMUFOM). This university is a private medical school in Willemstad, Curaçao, that opened in 2003. The school had half the number of students it required to break even in October 2005, and in October 2007, Banco de Caribe announced a sale of the university property. Students' education was never interrupted, and the sale never took place. Priyamvada Sharma took over as president of SMU in 2010. The university was designated as an educational institution for the Canada Student Loans Program in 2013. Third-year medical students rotate through Pontiac General Hospital in Pontiac, Michigan, for clerkships.
St. Martinus University is included in the World Directory of Medical Schools, and its graduates are qualified to apply for ECFMG certification, which allows them to take the United States Medical Licensing Examination and practice medicine in the United States. The Medical Council of India recognizes it as a degree-granting university/institution. The Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine and Other Health Professions, the Accreditation Commission of Colleges of Medicine, and the Accreditation Organisation of the Netherlands and Flanders have all refused to accredit it.
