Its history, on the other hand, dates back to 1970, when the Law College of the Netherlands Antilles was formed by a national order on October 6, 1970 (O.B. 1970 no. 1130) to train students for the LL.B. Antillean Law exam. After the establishment of a degree program in Business Administration, the Law College has renamed the College of the Netherlands Antilles in 1974. In 1977, the Department of Business Administration has renamed the Department of Business Administration and Public Administration, and students could now get a bachelor's degree in Public Administration as well. Finally, with the establishment of the UNA in 1979 by a national order dated 12 January 1979 (O.B. 1979 no. 12), the Antillean College of Technology (founded in 1972) was renamed the Faculty of Engineering.

This university is a private medical school in Willemstad, Curaçao, that opened in 2003. The school had half the number of students it required to break even in October 2005, and in October 2007, Banco de Caribe announced a sale of the university property. Students' education was never interrupted, and the sale never took place. Priyamvada Sharma took over as president of SMU in 2010. The university was designated as an educational institution for the Canada Student Loans Program in 2013.
