Tangier
Out of all of Morocco's European-looking cities, Tangier is one of the most gorgeous tourist destinations. This interesting city was pivotal in defining Morocco's literary history in the twentieth century, and it continues to do so today. Tourists come from all over the world to see the history and culture of this town. Tangier was the source of inspiration for works such as Paul Bowles' The Sheltering Sky and William Burroughs' Naked Lunch. Apart from the historical ambiance, you'll also discover some remaining bohemian cafes and louche bars to relax in while visiting some of Morocco's most famous sights.
Tangier is also a great destination to explore and base yourself when visiting the northern Atlantic and Mediterranean coastlines. Exploring the Roman ruins of Lixus, the seaside panoramas at Cap Spartel, and visiting the Spanish enclave of Ceuta on the Mediterranean Coast are just a few of the best things to do within a day's drive. Tangier is generally the first experience of Morocco for overlanders because of the major port, which has a lot of ships going to and from Spain. Spend a couple of days touring the city after disembarking before continuing south or east.
