The story follows Cid Kagenou, an ordinary high school student who is a devoted fan of "The Shadow's Master," a popular dark fantasy light novel series. Cid's life takes an unexpected turn when he dies in a traffic accident and is reborn in another world as the protagonist of his favorite novel series, determined to become the "Shadow's Master" himself.

However, there's a twist—Cid is not the actual protagonist of the story but a behind-the-scenes mastermind, orchestrating events from the shadows. He takes on the persona of Shadow, operating from the shadows to manipulate events and guide the story's characters, all while keeping his true identity hidden.

"The Eminence in Shadow" is known for its humor and meta-commentary on the isekai and fantasy genres. Cid's attempts to stay in the shadows while inadvertently becoming the center of attention lead to comedic situations and misunderstandings. The anime also pokes fun at common isekai tropes and clichés.
