The Mermaid by Stephen Chow (2016)
Stephen Chow's 2016 fantasy-comedy The Mermaid is set in China. The movie, which is produced by Stephen Chow and Bill Kong, stars Deng Chao, Lin Yun, Show Luo, and Zhang Yuqi. A group of mermaids live in a wildlife reserve that is purchased by a millionaire businessman named Liu Xuan (played by Deng Chao). He intends to demolish the reserve and develop the area as a housing complex. He must choose whether to carry out his intentions or assist in saving the mermaids from extinction after falling in love with one of them (played by Lin Yun).
The mermaids' underwater habitat is shown in the movie using a combination of live action and computer-generated imagery (CGI). The movie was a financial success, earning over $553 million at the Chinese box office and rising to the top spot among all Chinese movies ever made at the time of its release.
Critics gave The Mermaid favorable reviews, praising its clever combination of comedic, romantic, and fantasy aspects. A number of other honors were also given to the movie, including Best Director and Best Film at the Hong Kong Film Awards and Best Visual Effects at the 53rd Golden Horse Awards. This can be seen as one of the Best Chinese Science Fiction Movies.
