The Northern Mariana Islands
The Northern Mariana Islands is an island nation made up of 15 small islands. They are located in the Northwest Pacific Ocean. This includes all islands in the Mariana Archipelago except Guam. The state has a land area of approximately 464 square kilometers and a population of approximately 52,263. The capital is Capitol Hill, but the island's capital is Saipan.
The Northern Mariana Islands is a multi-party democracy and is part of the Commonwealth of the United States. The executive branch is led by the governor, while the state's legislative branch is in the legislature. The judiciary belongs to the Supreme Court. The area is prone to volcanic activity, so some have been evacuated. Although the CNMI itself is considered independent and is not subject to US customs laws, US federal law governs the CNMI.
