The ruins of the colonies
The remnants of European colonists remaining on the islands provide important information about the islands. We'll start with the capital of Cape Verde. No, not from Praya itself, but from its environs. The town of Cidade Velha, to be precise. It was here that Cape Verde's first capital was established.
The Portuguese castle of St. Philip, which was built as a protection against pirates, is still standing. A magnificent representation of Cape Verde's ruins and an emblem of the colonial past. There are relics of a past civilisation scattered around the archipelago, but they pale in comparison to this UNESCO-listed castle.
However, the Rocca Sabinada on the island of Sao Nicolau is a really intriguing rock. There are old inscriptions on the premises that have yet to be interpreted. Historians believe they were left by visitors to Cape Verde long before the Portuguese first arrived on the island.
