Although a bowling alley might not be your first choice for a drink in Hollywood, this isn't your typical bowling alley. The handsome parlor's length is framed by a stunning row of early 1800s roads that exude Art Deco grandeur and provide a clear view of Hollywood Boulevard through large cast-iron arched windows. But let's face it: the ace drink program, which was initially devised by Aidan Demarest and recently revitalized by rising talent Yael Vengroff, is the main incentive to visit this secret gaming den flanked by two glistening bars.

The Spare Room is famous for its punch bowls, of which there are four to select from, but Vengroff has upped the ante with 17 imaginative drinks that contain unexpected ingredients like pickle brine and vodka that has been bathed in coconut oil. Tiki culture is Vengroff's area of expertise. The passion fruit, Campari, Velvet Falernum, honey, and lemon are the main ingredients in The Bikini Kill ($15). The Salt & Vinegar Martini ($15), created with potato vodka, dry vermouth, pickle brine, and celery shrub, elevates the traditional cocktail to a whole new level for lovers of filthy martinis. Last but not least, the well-balanced Lucky Smoke ($17), which combines Japanese whisky, navy-strength Jamaican rum, banana liqueur, vanilla, and Good Luck bitters, is well worth the expensive price.
Grab some late-night companions and stake out a group of velvet recliners in the lounge area for a casual (and free!) game of Monopoly, Jenga, Scrabble, or even Mancala. You can even approach the bar with a date. All the games hostess needs to do is keep an ID on hand. Don't miss the Spare Room's monthly tiki night, which takes place from May through September and features guest bartenders from all around the country.
