The University of California at Los Angeles

The University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), a public land-grant research university, is located in Los Angeles. UCLA's academic roots can be traced back to 1882 when it was known as the southern branch of the California State Normal School (now San José State University). This school merged with UCLA in 1919 as the Southern Branch of the University of California, making it the second-oldest of the 10-campus University of California system (after UC Berkeley).


The mission of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) is to generate, distribute, preserve, and utilize knowledge for the benefit of a global society. The Undergraduate Research Center - Sciences encourages students to conduct research in a variety of fields such as engineering, mathematics, and the biological and physical sciences. The UCLA Samueli School of Engineering encourages research in artificial intelligence, computer system architecture and CAD, graphics and vision, computational systems biology, information and data management, network systems, software systems, and computer science theory. UCLA research has resulted in a portfolio of about 3,000 inventions, and more than 140 firms have been founded using UCLA technology.
