Thermo Fisher, based in Waltham, Massachusetts, was created in 2006 when Thermo Electron and Fisher Scientific merged. Life Technologies Corporation (2013), Alfa Aesar (2015), Affymetrix (2016), FEI Company (2016), and BD Advanced Bioprocessing are among the reagent, consumable, instrumentation, and service suppliers that Thermo Fisher has bought (2018).

The FDA granted Thermo Fisher emergency use authorization for a SARS-CoV-2 test in March 2020 to aid in the mitigation of the COVID-19 pandemic.
