Thermo Fisher, based in Waltham, Massachusetts, was created in 2006 when Thermo Electron and Fisher Scientific merged. Life Technologies Corporation (2013), Alfa Aesar (2015), Affymetrix (2016), FEI Company (2016), and BD Advanced Bioprocessing are among the reagent, consumable, instrumentation, and service suppliers that Thermo Fisher has bought (2018).


The corporation earned $21 billion in revenue in 2017 and was a Fortune 500 company. In 2018, the corporation employed over 100,000 people (in 2021) and had yearly revenues of $US 24 billion.


The FDA granted Thermo Fisher emergency use authorization for a SARS-CoV-2 test in March 2020 to aid in the mitigation of the COVID-19 pandemic.
