Twitter, a social networking service that launched in 2006, is without a doubt one of the most visited websites available today, with 100 million daily active users and 500 million tweets sent each day. Twitter may be used to get news, follow celebrities, and keep in touch with old high school pals.
Jack Dorsey, the co-founder of Twitter, had an idea in 2006: he would establish an SMS-based communications network where friends could keep track of each other by updating statuses. Twitter began as a concept that was all too similar to texting. The concept evolved as a result of brainstorming meetings with Dorsey's co-founder, Evan Williams. Jack made the first tweet on March 21, 2006, with the message "just setting up my twttr'". At the 2007 South By Southwest Interactive conference, more than 60,000 tweets were sent, showing Twitter's explosive growth. The Twitter team used the conference to start growing their user base.
Twitter distributes short messages of no more than 280 characters, known as tweets, and has had a significant impact on shaping politics and society in the early twenty-first century. A user creates a tweet and sends it to Twitter's server, which sends it to a list of other users (known as followers) who have agreed to receive the sender's messages. Furthermore, users may interact with one another via mentions (using the @ sign; for example, @Twitter) and choose to track certain subjects by clicking on hashtags (using the # sign; for example, #movies). These features create a type of discussion and increase the number of followers in a given Twitter feed into the millions.
