Yahoo is one of the most visited websites and widely used email services in the world. Yahoo, or Yahoo.com, is a web services provider that provides a search engine as well as a directory of World Wide Web pages organized in a topic hierarchy. While the Yahoo online portal began as a web directory, it quickly expanded to include other services such as email, news, and finance. Most significantly, Yahoo Search competes with Google Search and Microsoft Bing. Verizon acquired Yahoo in 2017. In 2021, Verizon sold Yahoo to Apollo Global Management as part of its Verizon Media division, which also included AOL, Engadget, TechCrunch, and a digital advertising platform.
Yahoo began as the bookmark list of two Stanford University graduate students, David Filo and Jerry Yang, in 1995. After posting their combined bookmark lists organized by topic on a college website, the list grew into an internet phenomenon. Yahoo, according to the site, stands for "Yet Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle" which became the first such directory with a large following.
In addition to its web search engine and directory, Yahoo account members get access to the following web-based services: Yahoo Mail, which offers free email accounts with unlimited storage, similar to Google and AOL; Yahoo Finance, which covers business and financial news; and Yahoo Sports, which covers sports news. Yahoo also offers online news, forecasts, and horoscopes.
