Tybee Island
Sand, sea, and salty breezes have their own allure, especially when combined with a dash of history, fresh local cuisine, and a variety of outdoor activities. Tybee Island is about 20 minutes from Savannah. This barrier island has five miles of public beaches ideal for sunbathing, people-watching, surfing, and frolicking in the Atlantic Ocean's sand and surf. The island's south-end pier and pavilion are ideal for taking in the scenery or reeling in the catch of the day.
The Tybee Lighthouse, built in 1736, is one of the country's oldest lighthouses, with a spectacular view from the top. Aquariums showcasing native marine life can be found at Marine Science Center. There are more than 800 residences that serve as vacation rentals on Tybee Island. Houses, cottages, and condos offer outstanding options for beachfront, beach view, and marsh view locations across the island. Hotels and bed and breakfast inns also are available. Enjoy dining out at the island's 25 restaurants (all casual), many featuring fresh, local seafood and warm, friendly Southern smiles.
