U Zlatého tygra
U Zlatého tygra is a traditional Czech pub housed in a 14th-century building and a former hub of 20th-century political dissidence. This "House at the Golden Tiger" is on Prague's historic pub list as a favorite of 20th-century Czech author Bohumil Hrabal. Other past patrons have included political influencers, such as Bill Clinton and Vaclav Havel discussing US-Czech friendship over Pilsner. When the walls have seen this level of influential history, there won't be many open seats among the long-term regulars.
While almost every tourist guidebook in Prague lists this pub as a "must-see", it still retains some of its old charm, which is well captured in the writings of Bohumil Hrabal. His vivid and poetic descriptions of the table societies at U Tygra are part of the Czech literary canon. When the pub opens at 3 p.m., there is a long line of elderly regulars waiting for their pint. U Tygra is also known for its short menu, which includes only coffee, ordinary red and white wine, soda, and coke in addition to the crisp Pilsner beer. Beer cheese is legendary in the culinary world. The rest of the menu contains classic cold snacks to go with beer and a number of warm dishes, which once in a while may include something exotic.
