Unique Nomadic culture

The Kyrgyz have been a nomadic tribe that have moved ceaselessly around the region's mountains and valleys with their cattle from time immemorial. Today, a considerable majority of the Kyrgyz population still live a nomadic, traditional existence, not too different from their forefathers.

Yurts were and continue to be an important part of nomadic culture. They are warm enough to protect against Central Asia's severe winters while being mobile enough to be packed and moved by horse. Life on the steppes would be considerably more difficult without the yurt. In Kyrgyzstan, yurts may be seen anywhere, including in towns. Yurts are the ideal places in Kyrgyzstan and Central Asia to stay and experience a traditional dwelling made by nomads.

The ancient skill of hunting with golden eagles is one of Kyrgyzstan's most stunning traditions. Eagle hunting originated in Central Asia. Nomads traversing the Central Asian steppes began taming these birds of prey thousands of years ago. During the hard winter months, they would tame and teach the birds, then employ them to hunt and collect furs. One method for teaching the eagle to hunt is to tie a stuffed fox pelt to a rope. The hunter then pulls the rope while galloping his horse. Every time the bird catches the fur, he is rewarded with a bloodied chunk of meat for his efforts. Kyrgyzstan is one of the few regions in Central Asia where nomadic tribes' customs may still be found.
