The Tridentine Seminary College of Saint Raymond is the foundation of UNAN-León. UNAN-León was founded in 1812 as the second university in Central America and the last during the Spanish colony's final years on the continent. In 1983, the government split the National Autonomous University of Nicaragua's campuses in León and Managua into two separate entities: UNAN and UNAN-León.
