University of Kinshasa
The University of Kinshasa is one of three institutions established following the division of the National University of Zaire. The other two are the University of Kisangani and the University of Lubumbashi (UNAZA). In the 2018–2019 academic year, the university had 29,554 students and 1,929 teaching and research employees. It now has twelve academic divisions.
The University of Kinshasa is located in the neighborhood of Lemba, about 25 kilometers (16 miles) south of central Kinshasa.
Belgian colonial authorities founded it as Lovanium University in 1954 in response to accusations that they had done too little to educate Congolese people. Initially, the university was linked with the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium. When it first opened, the university got large subsidies from the colonial government as well as financing from the Ford Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation, and the United States Agency for International Development, and it was hailed as the best university in Africa.
