  1. The University of Kinshasa is one of three institutions established following the division of the National University of Zaire. The other two are the University of Kisangani and the University of Lubumbashi (UNAZA). In the 2018–2019 academic year, the university had 29,554 students and 1,929 teaching and research employees. It now has twelve academic divisions.

The University of Kinshasa is located in the neighborhood of Lemba, about 25 kilometers (16 miles) south of central Kinshasa.

Belgian colonial authorities founded it as Lovanium University in 1954 in response to accusations that they had done too little to educate Congolese people. Initially, the university was linked with the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium. When it first opened, the university got large subsidies from the colonial government as well as financing from the Ford Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation, and the United States Agency for International Development, and it was hailed as the best university in Africa.

  2. The University of Lubumbashi, abbreviated UNILU, is one of the largest universities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is located in Lubumbashi, Haut Katanga Province, which was originally known as Katanga Province. The campus is located in the city's northern outskirts, west of the airport.

Under the Belgian colonial administration, the University of Liège established the Official University of the Congo and Ruanda-Urundi in 1955, and it opened in 1956. In 1971, it was one of the institutions that combined to form the National University of Zaire. When the National University of Zaire was split up in 1981, it was re-established as an autonomous university.

University of Lubumbashi's notable alumni include award-winning photojournalist Sammy Baloji, rebel commander General William Yakutumba, and Roman Catholic archbishop Christophe Munzihirwa Mwene Ngabo.

  3. The University of Kisangani (UNIKIS) is located in the Democratic Republic of the Congo's city of Kisangani. It was founded in 1963 by Protestant missionaries as the Free University of the Congo; in 1971, it became part of the National University of Zaire; and in 1981, it was separated from that National University, along with the Universities of Kinshasa and Lubumbashi, to become the University of Kisangani. The Free University of the Congo was the university's initial name, and it began with 50 students and six full-time teachers.

Early detractors accused the founders, a small group of American Protestant missionaries, of attempting to counterbalance Belgian and Catholic Church power in the new republic. The University of Kisangani did receive some money from various Protestant organizations, but it also received contributions from the new Congolese government, as well as the governments of West Germany and the Netherlands.
