University of Lubumbashi
The University of Lubumbashi, abbreviated UNILU, is one of the largest universities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is located in Lubumbashi, Haut Katanga Province, which was originally known as Katanga Province. The campus is located in the city's northern outskirts, west of the airport.
Under the Belgian colonial administration, the University of Liège established the Official University of the Congo and Ruanda-Urundi in 1955, and it opened in 1956. In 1971, it was one of the institutions that combined to form the National University of Zaire. When the National University of Zaire was split up in 1981, it was re-established as an autonomous university.
University of Lubumbashi's notable alumni include award-winning photojournalist Sammy Baloji, rebel commander General William Yakutumba, and Roman Catholic archbishop Christophe Munzihirwa Mwene Ngabo.
