Vatican Museums
The Vatican Museums are the undisputed most popular Rome museums since they hold one of the world's most famous and comprehensive collections. The museum is comprised of hundreds of rooms, halls, and galleries containing items dating from antiquity to the current day. Paintings, frescoes, tapestries, and sculptures dating back to 1506 are among them. In 1506 Pope Julius II purchased the antique sculpture Laocoon and His Sons for the Vatican Museum. Michelangelo's intricately frescoed Sistine Chapel, is a testament to the Renaissance period and Catholic Church teachings on the origin of man.
It also displays stories from the Old and New Testaments. In the hall and galleries, you may also see Egyptian Mummies, Etruscan bronzes, antique busts, and modern artworks. Cortile della Pigna, Cortile della Biblioteca, and Cortile del Belvedere are the three courtyards.
