Whetstone
Whetstone Magazine, founded in 2017, is an independently produced print and digital periodical exploring world food origins, culture, and culinary anthropology. Traditional culinary media has increasingly been called to account for its role in perpetuating racial supremacy.
Whetstone, which celebrates food origins and culture, was launched in 2017 by culinary writer and former sommelier Stephen Satterfield and consultant Melissa Shi. It contains stories on the Salvadoran diaspora, the hunt (and struggle!) for biodiverse avocados, home cooking in Kyrgyzstan, and other themes. Whetstone is led by a team of women and people of color, as stated on its website. When the gatekeepers are varied, so are the stories, the people who tell them, and their experiences.
