Yakima HighRoad
Although roof racks are more costly than trunk racks (and less convenient to use than hitch racks,), they provide unobstructed access to your vehicle's cargo space and are the only alternative for some automobile types. (Warning: They may significantly lower your car's highway fuel efficiency.)
The Yakima HighRoad roof rack was the simplest to use out of all the mudguards we tested - both while installing it to the car and loading bikes. It securely holds your bike by the front wheels, which we prefer to fork-mount designs, since the rack does not touch the frame of your bike. Also, you do not need to remove the front wheel and transport it separately.
The Yakima HighRoad is compatible with a broad range of bicycles and allows you to secure your bicycles to the racks (and secure the racks to the vehicle's roof), something not all exterior racks can do. However, your car must have roof rails on which to place the rack (this is true for all roof racks). If your vehicle does not come equipped with these, you may purchase them from Yakima or Thule.
