Yomiuri Shimbun is notable for having the world's highest newspaper circulation, with a daily circulation of 9,017,000 copies. Based on these daily circulation figures, Yomiuri Shimbun is also the world's best-selling newspaper. The Yomiuri Shimbun is a Japanese newspaper that is distributed throughout Japan, including Tokyo, Osaka, Fukuoka, and other important cities.

It is a conservative-leaning newspaper that represents Tokyo. Along with the liberal (Third way) Asahi Shimbun in Osaka and the Social Democratic Chunichi Shimbun in Nagoya, it is one of Japan's prominent newspapers.

It is published by regional bureaus that are all subsidiaries of The Yomiuri Shimbun Holdings, Japan's largest media conglomerate by revenue and second largest by size behind Sony, which is privately held and controlled, directly and indirectly, by the Shōriki family, descendants and relatives of Matsutar Shriki. The family has owned The Holdings since Matsutarō Shōriki bought the newspaper in 1924 (now owning 45.26 percent of the stock); nevertheless, the family is not active in its executive operations.
