  1. Pulau Hantu literally translates to "Ghost Island" or "Island of the Ghosts". According to local tradition, two powerful warriors engaged in the terrible conflict were converted into two islands by the gods after their deaths, Pulau Hantu Kechil (Little Ghost Island) and Pulau Hantu Besar (Big Ghost Island) (Bigger Ghost Island).

Pulau Hantu, Singapore's most popular diving destination, is a 30-minute boat ride from the mainland. This location consists of two islands, Hantu Kecil and Hantu Besar, both of which are home to a diverse array of marine species. The vibrant soft and hard corals sparkle in the sunlight, and the shallow dive provides excellent visibility. Turtles, marigold dragons, and sharks can also be seen here, particularly during the cooler months. During low tide, one can even walk between the two islands. Diving on Pulau Hantu is possible all year. For the most part of the year, the water temperature on the island remains pleasant around 28 to 29°C.

  2. Kusu Island, or Pulau Kusu in the native language, is surrounded by a beautiful fringing reef. The government has established a 5-mile marine protection zone surrounding Pulau Kusu and the neighboring islands. Commercial fishing boats are not permitted in the area. This reclusive island located at St John’s Island, 6 kilometers away from the mainland, is a cozy spot for beginners to try their hand scuba diving away from the prying eyes of tourists. The shallow dives at Kusu Island offer spectacular views of hard and soft corals. Spot anemonefish, parrotfish, and turtles within the corals too.

The spectacular undersea world inside this protected region has everything imaginable, from gigantic fish like tunas, dolphins, whales, mantas, and sharks to large schools of fish and smaller creatures like pygmy seahorses. The reefs are alive with hard coral gardens, lush colorful soft corals, and gorgonians. Walls, slopes, tunnels, caves, overhangs, seagrass beds, and underwater pinnacles abound in the seascape.

  3. The Sisters' Islands Marine Park, which will cover approximately 40 hectares around the Sisters' Islands as well as the western reefs of both St John's Island and Pulau Tekukor, will serve as a platform for outreach, educational, conservation, and research activities relating to our native marine biodiversity. The location was chosen because of its diverse habitats, which include coral reefs, sandy coasts, and seagrass meadows.

Two different trails of varying depths have been developed to highlight the diversity of marine species and unique structures found in Singapore's waters. The shallow route is around 100m long and will take divers around a loop to a maximum depth of 6m. The deep track has a maximum depth of 15 meters. This marine park, which was recently opened to the public, is home to a diverse array of sea life and fish species such as parrotfish, clownfish, harlequin fish, eels, and turtles. Regular diving sessions are organized by the National Parks Board here. The spooky Iran Sarai wreck can also be seen 18 meters underwater off the coast of Sisters Island.

  4. The Sudong Wreck is 50 meters long and well-preserved at a depth of 15 meters. This steel warship was sunk during WWII and is nearly complete. This wreck is frequented by sharks and turtles, making it a famous scuba diving location in Singapore. It is better to dive this wreck only during slack tide because visibility is excellent.

While Singapore has its own diving destinations, most diving centers transport participants on open water dives to neighboring Malaysia and Indonesia. Pulau Tioman, Pulau Redang, Pulau Kapas, and Pulau Lang Tengah are four prominent Malaysian islands in the state of Terengganu.
