With all of its great characters, F.R.I.E.N.D.S. has been the best program in the history of show-making. "Friends" has also had a long and fruitful afterlife, ... read more...

  1. One can enjoy the time of his or her life watching this program. A total Manhattan blackout includes Chandler's sarcastic defensive mechanism in difficult situations like being locked in an ATM with a hot Victoria's Secret model.

Ross's eager attempts to finally ask Rachel out, as well as being mauled by a psychotic cat. The cat turns out to be Paolo, a handsome Italian guy Rachel has a thing on. Ross' irrational jealousy emotions and responses are hilarious. Along with Phoebe's strange as well as great guitar tunes and crazy countdown. Joey Tribbiani's trademark innocence and foolishness lighting up images of chuckles make this one of Friends' Best Episodes.

  2. The plot of this episode is that everyone eventually discovers Monica and Chandler are secretly in a relationship. There are several Friends episodes, including the ones listed above, that die-hard fans will point to and exclaim, "That one!" As in, "Begin with that one." It finest exemplifies it." But, more often than not, they'll bring up this fifth-season highlight in which everyone (even Ross) discovers Monica and Chandler are dating.

The couple has kept it a secret since Ross' catastrophic London wedding at the end of season four, but everyone knows it won't last. Joey was the first to find out, followed by Rachel, and now Phoebe. Ross eventually discovers it near the end of the episode while trying to get to the Ugly Naked Guy's apartment while suffering from crippling anger issues.

  3. Phoebe accepts to be a surrogate mother as everyone else engages in a fun quiz game. Monica Geller's competitiveness should never be underestimated. She wouldn't let go of the football from her brother Ross in the preceding Thanksgiving episode, and she's not going to back down from some fun wagers with the lads - despite Rachel's reservations. Chandler and Joey, on the other hand, have a lot to lose with their pet duck and their chick-turned-rooster.

They also have a lot to gain because Monica has agreed to let them take the girls' flat if they win. None of this is meant to detract from the far more serious nature of Phoebe's story, which has plenty of silly elements of its own, but it's all quite memorable nonetheless.

  4. The plot is as follows: When Ross and Monica's parents bring over some of the latter's belongings, she discovers an old DVD of her and Rachel preparing for their senior prom.

When a television sitcom has an opportunity to go back in time and show what its characters looked like in a prior decade, it should make use of it. So get your perms and awful mustaches ready, because this one has it all. Or, more accurately, a younger, lovelorn Ross has it all. Despite the fact that Ross and Rachel are arguing for the majority of the episode, the first humiliating recording demonstrates how much he is and has always been, in love with her. Also, it ends with Monica discovering what amounts to a sex tape her parents recorded, so that’s hilarious.

  5. The Plot: No one is prepared to be on time for an event.

Another wonderful "bottle" episode from Friends, this one is packed with the show's usual absurdity. It's a hilarious half-hour comedy entry, from Chandler and Joey's developing prank battle, which leads to Joey wearing all of Chandler's clothes at the same time, to Monica's repeated attempts to answer, erase, and modify what she assumes to be an ex-old boyfriend's message. The more Monica attempts to mend (or forget) things with Richard, the worse things get for her — and the funnier things get for everyone else.

  6. The Story: Phoebe discovers a forgotten wallet with a police badge at Central Perk and uses it to scare people into behaving themselves in public, including the cop who lost it in the first place.

Why It's On The List: Phoebe's run-in with the officer whose badge she's been flaunting ended in a first date, not an arrest. Despite the tenderness of this, and Rachel's efforts to help Joey make more female friends, the actual meat of this episode is Ross' new couch. To save money, he decides to deliver it himself and enlists the help of his friends, resulting in the iconic "pivot" scene and its subsequent meme. On the one hand, it's yet another example of Ross's mind-numbing frustration. The schadenfreude that comes from seeing his sofa disintegrate, on the other hand, is pure delight.

  7. The Story: For New Year’s Eve 1999, the gang shares their resolutions with each other and decides to support them as best as they can.

Of course, the majority of these resolutions are only as good as the pledged support. Take, for example, Ross' crazy leather pants. He chooses to try wearing said pants since he wants to try something new every day, and because Chandler has given up making fun of everyone for a week, he can't state the obvious. So Ross learns the hard way on a date when he contacts Joey for (terrible) advice on how to de-shrink his sweat-soaked trousers. This drama isn't the entire show, but it's one of its highlights and one of the finest Ross gags in the series.

  8. The Story: While watching a Thanksgiving Day football game together, everyone decides to play a game of their own — despite Monica and Ross’ reluctance due to a mishap at the sixth annual Geller Cup.

More than anything, this episode exemplifies what Friends (and many other pre-bingable sitcoms) are famous for "bottle" episodes. That is, it is a self-contained narrative that, although referencing broader ideas and arcs going across the series, stands properly on its own two feet. Or, at least, it does when it isn't being addressed. There are lots of amusing throwaway bits (such as Chandler and Joey's mutually futile attempts to seduce a random passerby), but Monica and Ross' heated competition takes the prize.

  9. The Story: Speaking of anxious weddings and the flings that accompany them, the two-part finale finds Monica and Chandler marrying, with Joey serving as preacher and Rachel, Phoebe, and Ross looking on.

While the preceding entry's one caveat is that what makes it wonderful is at the expense of Emily, these two episodes manage to pull just as many good comedy punches without any additional damage. These episodes have everything, from Ross' attempts to appear physically dominant elder brother to a heartbreaking moment with Chandler looking at a newborn onesie in a gift store. They're especially effective as a "faking" narrative, in which some of the characters must divert one or two others from potentially damaging facts. In this scenario, it is Chandler's abrupt change of heart about marrying Monica.

  10. The Plot: Monica is reminded of a prior romance, and Chandler goes to great lengths to mend his connection with Joey.

As the gang judges Monica for her romantic interest in her (much older) ex-kid boyfriend's (which leads to a superb dissection of everyone else's romantic and life failures by Monica), Thanksgiving becomes unpleasant. Meanwhile, Chandler places himself in a cage to atone for kissing Joey's ex-girlfriend, Kathy. The extended play with Chandler in the box is plenty of laughter, but the emotional high point of the episode sees Kathy (Paget Brewster) realizing she couldn't break up Joey and Chandler's friendship, forcing Joey to go past his rage and rescue Chandler from the box so he may pursue the lady he loves. It's a good reminder of the characters' strong fondness for one another, as well as the dimension it provides to the program.

  11. The Plot: Rachel and Phoebe try to assist Monica as she tries to impress a potential new boss, while Ross struggles with a romantic request and seeking counsel from Joey. Jon Lovitz plays Steve, a restaurant entrepreneur who comes to Monica's flat for a culinary demonstration. Unfortunately, after a brief obsession with the term "tartlet," Steve swings from Lovitz's gruff persona to stoned out of his mind, rummaging for munchies in the kitchen.

Despite Lovitz's top-tier cameo, the episode's biggest scene may be Chandler walking in on Joey rather aggressively teaching Ross the art of nasty language after an embarrassing date blunder. It's not so much how Chandler exits his room after Joey demands Ross tell him he wants to caress him as it is watching Chandler's excitement at this unexpected walk-in as Ross and Joey discover they are not alone. The chuckle was there in the set-up, but Chandler's patience in letting it grow and basking in the discomfort improves the moment.

  12. The Story: Rachel knows Ross loves her but Ross, who’s still dating Julie (Lauren Tom), doesn’t know that she knows. Rachel leaves a drunken phone message in which she confesses her feelings, and when Ross finds out, at first he’s furious with her. But he can’t stay mad for long.

It took a complete season of Cheers for Sam and Diane to get together for the first time, while Ross and Rachel's "will they or won't they?" lasted a season and a third. Their first kiss was like a pressure cooker releasing all of its steam all at once... And, of course, due to some theatrical twists, they'd have to wait a little longer to make things official. Not only is it a relief, but the episode's build-up is funny; Rachel hopping atop Ross' shoulder, attempting to block him from listening to her soused tape, is top-tier physical comedy. The b-plot, in which Chandler soon regrets hiring Monica as his personal trainer, is quite entertaining.

  13. The Plot: Chandler intends to propose to Monica, but her mightiest old flame — Tom Selleck's Richard — chooses to resurface at the worst possible time.

Monica and Chandler's relationship isn't as crazy as Ross and Rachel's; after they recognized they loved each other, it didn't take long for things to turn serious, and they weren't big on drama. Still, when Richard returns, it takes two episodes for things to settle down, resulting in one of the series' most poignant sequences, with the ever-sarcastic Chandler proposing to the one he loves in a straight-faced manner. Friends seldom become this serious, which is why the tonal shift works so well.

  14. The Story: Monica and Chandler give each other awful Valentine gifts, but much more importantly Rachel and Phoebe start a self-defense class, prompting Ross to show off the skills he doesn’t actually have.

Ross began Friends as the mopey unhappy guy with puppy-dog feelings for Rachel. But as the evening progressed, we saw Ross in a less favorable light. By Season 6, he was claiming to be an expert in a fictitious karate school called "unagi," which he says translates to "a state of absolute awareness" but is simply the Japanese term for eel. It's something else to watch three individuals who aren't adept at martial arts fail at what turns out to be a game of vengeance.

  15. The Storyline: It's the traditional Thanksgiving episode, but with a twist: Their visitor is Will, who attended school with Ross, Rachael, and Monica and, like Monica, used to be overweight. Oh, and he's played by Jennifer Aniston's ex-husband, Brad Pitt.

This was still a contentious remark when it debuted in 2001: Brad Pitt is amusing. He could be one of the strangest and most amusing people on the globe. He'd been hilarious previously, in films ranging from 12 Monkeys to True Romance to Snatch. But films like Burn After Reading, Inglourious Basterds, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood — when he truly let his freak flag fly — were still in the works, and he was largely portraying serious studs. This is, if nothing else, a preview of what was to come in his one and only on-screen appearance beside Anniston.
