Taking over the former Eastern Bloc pub in 2017, the perpetually witty actor Alan Cumming and promoter-provocateur Daniel Nardicio transformed it into a cabaret, comedy, and party hub that pays homage to the heyday of NYC's downtown nightlife. Paul McCartney, Emma Stone, and Vanessa Williams have all been spotted there on occasion, but the club has its own star as a cheeky-decadent quasiqueer hangout with a playful, inviting atmosphere and risqué murals by Cumming's husband, Grant Shaffer. Fridays and Saturdays are hosted by the lovely and charismatic trans singer Daphne Always and feature dance music and go-go boys. Mondays are a sexy-geeky Broadway open-mic night with pianist Lance Horne.
Club Cumming is the best new addition to the East Village in recent memory. It is a haven of creativity and community that relies on historical traditions but is firmly rooted in the present. The heritage of downtown nightclub performance is rich but in danger.
