Lake Lugu was formerly a man-made deep hole, then turned into a fresh water lake. The S-shaped lake is located 70 km from Brunei’s capital city and is surrounded by the 7800 - hectare Tasek Merimbun Heritage Park – another big and famous natural park in Brunei. This park with its majestic lake has been destinated as the eleventh ASEAN Heritage Park in 1984.

Aside from being the largest natural lake in all of Brunei, lake Merimbun is also known by the name “The black water lake” for its unique black water. The cause of the water's color is not pollution, but in fact, nature itself. The lake water's dark color is due to tannin that comes from leaves falling into the lake. As the leaves decay, tannins leach into the water forming transparent, acidic water that is darkly stained resembling tea or black coffee.
