Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph ranks 4th in the list of best places to visit in San Jose. The Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph was initially a tiny adobe church constructed for settlers' use rather than that of the local Indians. The settlement, which was formerly known as El Pueblo de San Jose de Guadalupe, started construction in 1803. The original building was irreparably damaged by earthquakes in 1818 and 1822, and a second adobe chapel was constructed to take its place starting in 1835.

In the Hayward Earthquake of 1868, the second church suffered significant damage as well. An 1875 fire completely destroyed the third church, which had been constructed in 1869. Within a few blocks, a fourth improvised building was constructed. The majestic Basilica that still stands today is the sixth and final structure. The church's first foundation was laid in 1876, and in 1997, the Vatican officially accorded it a basilica title. The oldest municipal park in California is Alum Rock Park in San Jose, which was first formed in 1872 but has been used as public space since the pueblo's founding in 1777. The 720-acre park has 13 miles of trails, ranging from fairly level along Penitencia Creek to severe switchbacks up to the ridges to the South Rim Trail and the North Rim Trail. It is situated in a valley in the foothills of the Diablo Range on the east side of San Jose. A tourist center, a small museum/animal rehabilitation center, picnic spaces, playgrounds, lawns, sand volleyball courts, mineral springs, beautiful vegetation, forests, creek play areas, and occasionally group camping are all located on the valley's narrow floor.

Views of Santa Clara Valley and the valley where the park is situated can be seen from the ridge trails. Some of the park's paths are a part of the Bay Area Ridge Route; the Todd Quick trail leads to the 1,600-acre Sierra Vista Open Space Preserve managed by the Santa Clara Valley Open Space Authority. Some of the park's paths are open to equestrians and mountain bikers, while others are solely accessible to hikers. The park is used by cross-country teams from high schools in the North San Jose area for practice and competitions, including James Lick High School and Independence High.

Sarah Winchester, the widow of Winchester Rifle tycoon William Winchester, constructed the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose in 1884. It once rose to a height of seven stories, but the 1906 San Francisco earthquake caused some damage. The house has four stories currently.

Because Sarah thought the house was haunted by those who had been killed by a Winchester rifle, she had her house erected without the guidance of an architect over the course of the home's 38 years of development. As a result, there are several oddities in the design, including doors and stairs that lead nowhere. Despite the home's 40 bedrooms, there is just one functional bathroom. She thought that by taking these actions during construction, she was confusing the ghosts.

In the middle of the city's metropolitan core is the San Jose Heritage Rose Garden, a hidden gem. a remarkable rose garden spanning five acres with 3,500 plants and approximately 3,000 different types. A legacy rose garden should include "unknown" or "found" roses. A heritage rose is one that has undergone extensive breeding over many decades, if not centuries.

Even though the majority of these kinds are from Europe, there are many here that were found in old cemeteries, gardens of older homes, and even some that were literally found beside to a dirt road. The City of San Jose pays for all gardening supplies used to maintain the San Jose Heritage Rose Garden, which is tended to by a dedicated army of volunteers.
