The Saints Cyril and Methodius University of Skopje is the country's oldest and largest public university. It is named after the Byzantine Christian missionaries and theologians Cyril and Methodius. The university has a total of 25,220 students enrolled for the 2018–19 school year. Furthermore, there are 2,390 members of the teaching and research staff, who are supported by over 300 members of the university's institutions.
The primary language of instruction is Macedonian, but a variety of courses are offered in English, German, French, and Italian. There are also courses in Albanian, the second official language of North Macedonia.

The Goce Delčev University of Štip (abbreviated UGD) is a public university in the Republic of North Macedonia. The university, which was founded in 2007, has twelve faculties and three academies (as of July 2019). The university has a total of 8,237 students enrolled for the 2018–19 school year.
Academic faculties, administrative departments, and libraries are all part of the UGD structure. The university has 12 faculties and three academies, and it offers over 100 study programs across three academic cycles. UGD has a coat of arms, flag, insignia, gown, plaque, and anthem, among other things.
UGD has four distinct campuses. the Art Academy, Academy of Music, and Film Academy are all located on Campus 1. South East European University (SEEU) is an internationally recognized private-public nonprofit higher education institution based in Tetovo, North Macedonia, with a branch campus in Skopje. It was founded in 2001 on the initiative of former top-level Dutch diplomat and OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities HE Max van der Stoel. Since its inception, the university has been successful in combining the best of European and American experience, and it has benefited from numerous academic collaborations sponsored by the European Commission and USAID, among other donors.
Former Swedish diplomat HE Rolf Ekéus stated during the opening ceremony: "Today is a good day for Europe. At a time when good news is in short supply, it is heartening to see that progress can be made towards building peace among people. […] In the future, people will think of Tetovo as the site of a multi-lingual university". The university is a member of the European University Association as well as the Balkan Universities Network.
Former Dutch diplomat HE Max van der Stoel, who initiated the venture of launching a globally recognized university and higher education excellence center with a European orientation in the region in the late 1990s, has been lauded for the establishment of the South East European University (SEEU).
Max van der Stoel, the University's first Chairman of the International Advisory Board, emphasized the University's European orientation, saying, "We know the wish of the population of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia to have increasingly close relations with countries of the European Union and to have education at a standard recognized by European academic institutions".
The international community was approached for funding for the project, while the local government provided the land on which the university is built. Since its inception, the project has been overseen by both an international and a national advisory board.

The St. Clement of Ohrid University of Bitola is a public university in North Macedonia. It is based in Bitola and has faculties in Prilep, Ohrid, Veles, Kichevo, and Skopje. It was established on April 25, 1979, but the name St. Clement of Ohrid was not given to it until late 1994. The university has 4,139 students enrolled for the 2018–19 school year.

The University of Information Science and Technology "St. Paul The Apostle" (abbreviated UIST) is a public university in North Macedonia. The university has 375 students enrolled for the 2018–19 school year.
In 2008, the Parliament of the Republic of Macedonia passed the Act on the Establishment of the University for Information Technology, which established UIST. UIST students built the first supercomputer (cluster computer) in the Republic of North Macedonia in 2010.
UIST has a multinational student population from more than 40 countries worldwide, in addition to local students, as a result of the university's international outreach. UIST has 15 Undergraduate and Master's programs in English as the medium of instruction that are accredited. According to the Academic Ranking of World Universities for 2015–2016, UIST was ranked as one of the top three universities in North Macedonia, out of 19 others.
