    Makerere University

    Makerere University, Kampala, is Uganda's largest and oldest higher education institution, founded in 1922 as a technical school. In 1970, it became an independent national university. Makerere University now consists of nine colleges and one school, with approximately 36,000 undergraduates and 4,000 postgraduate students enrolled. The main administrative block was destroyed by fire in September 2020, and the cause of the fire is still unknown.


    According to US News & World Report, Makerere University is the eighth-best university in Africa and the 569th-best university in the world. Makerere is the highest-ranked university in Sub-Saharan Africa outside of South Africa in the 2020 U.S. News & World Report rankings. According to the 2016 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, it is Africa's fourth-best university.


    Many post-independence African leaders attended Makerere University, including Ugandan President Milton Obote and Tanzanian Presidents Julius Nyerere and Benjamin Mkapa. Former Democratic Republic of the Congo President Joseph Kabila and former Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki are both Makerere University graduates.


    Makerere University was a focal point for the literary activity that was central to African nationalist culture in the years following Uganda's independence. Many notable writers have attended Makerere University, including Nuruddin Farah, Ali Mazrui, David Rubadiri, Okello Oculi, Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o, John Ruganda, Paul Theroux, Nobel Prize laureate V. S. Naipaul, and Peter Nazareth.


    Between 2006 and 2016, the university was closed three times due to student unrest and faculty dissatisfaction. The last time it was used was on November 1, 2016, when President Yoweri Museveni declared it permanently closed. In January 2017, the university reopened.

Kampala International University (KIU) is a private, non-profit university in Uganda. It was founded in 2001 and received chattered status in 2009.


    In order to raise the next generation of problem solvers for the East African region and indeed Africa, the University operates a multi-campus system that includes two campuses in Uganda (the Main Campus in Kampala and the Western Campus in Ishaka-Bushenyi), one in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, and a third in Nairobi, Kenya.


    The University, which began as a traditional degree-awarding institution, has now grown to become Uganda's number one Private University and is currently ranked fifth in the country according to the 2019 Webometric Ranking out of 50 universities. It is a member of the Commonwealth Universities Association, the Association of African Universities, and the Inter-University Council of East Africa.     Uganda Christian University

    Uganda Christian University (UCU) is a private university founded by the Church of Uganda. It was the first private university in Uganda to be granted a charter by the Ugandan government. The Anglican Church of Uganda established UCU in 1997 from its premier theological seminary/college, Bishop Tucker Theological College, which was founded in 1913 and named after pioneer missionary bishop Alfred Robert Tucker.


    UCU's main campus, which has approximately 8,000 students, is located in Mukono, about 25 kilometers (16 miles) east of Uganda's capital city, Kampala, on the Kampala-Jinja Highway. The main campus is located at 0°21'27.0"N, 32°44'29.0"E. (Latitude:0.357500; Longitude:32.741389).


    Bishop Barham University College is a regional constituent college of UCU, with approximately 1,500 students, located in Kabale, approximately 420 kilometers (261 miles) southwest of Kampala by road. Other regional campuses include the UCU Mbale Campus in Mbale and the UCU Arua Campus in Arua. The construction of a permanent fifth campus in Kampala's Mengo neighborhood, along Musajja Alumbwa Road, began in 2019.

  4. Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST), also known as Mbarara University, is a Ugandan public university. Mbarara University began accepting students and providing instruction in 1989. It is one of the country's ten public universities and degree-granting institutions. The Uganda National Council for Higher Education has accredited MUST.


    There are two campuses at the university: the Mbarara Campus and Kihumuro Campus. The Mbarara Campus is located on the Mbarara-Kabale Highway, about 266 kilometers (165 miles) southwest of Kampala, Uganda's capital and largest city. The university campus is located at 0.616944°S 30.506667°E.


    The Kihumuro Campus is located in the Kihumuro suburb, approximately 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) west of Mbarara's central business district on the Mbarara-Bushenyi Road. The campus is located on 139 hectares (340 acres) of land, away from the noise of the city. Once completed, it will house all university faculties and institutes, with the exception of the College of Health Sciences, which will remain on the Mbarara Campus. The Ugandan government has spent USD billion (approximately US$2 million) of its own money on the project. It has also obtained a US$12 million loan from the African Development Bank to expedite construction.

The International University of East Africa (IUEA) is a private university in Uganda that was founded in 2010 and is licensed by the Uganda National Council for Higher Education (NCHE). The IUEA multicultural environment is comprised of a student body and staff who bring diverse experiences and dynamism to the institution.


    International University of East Africa is one of Uganda's newest universities. The campus is 20 acres in size and is located in Kansanga, off the Kampala-Ggaba Road in the southern part of the Kampala Metropolitan Area (8.1 ha). The student body is expected to reach 10,000 once the campus infrastructure is fully installed. Professor Emmanuel Tumusiime-Mutebile, the current Governor of the Bank of Uganda, the national Central Bank of Uganda, was the first Chancellor of IUEA.     Kyambogo University

    Kyambogo University (KYU) is a Ugandan public university. It is one of the country's eight public universities and degree-granting institutions. The Uganda Polytechnic Kyambogo (UPK), the Institute of Teacher Education, Kyambogo (ITEK), and the Uganda National Institute of Special Education merged to form Kyambogo University in 2003, as part of the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act 2001. (UNISE).


    Makerere College (now Makerere University) separated its trade and technical courses in 1928 to form the new Kampala Technical School. The school was relocated to Nakawa and renamed Kampala Technical Institute. That school was relocated to Kyambogo in 1958, renamed Uganda Technical College, and then renamed Uganda Polytechnic, Kyambogo.


    ITEK began in 1948 as a government teacher training college in Nyakasura, Kabarole District. It moved to Kyambogo Hill as a national teachers' college in 1954 and was renamed ITEK by statute of parliament in 1989.


    UNISE was affiliated with the Department of Special Education at Makerere University's faculty of education before becoming an autonomous institution by Act of Parliament in 1998.

    Gulu University

    The seventh famous university in the Top 10 Best Universities in Uganda that Toplist wants to introduce to you is Gulu University. Gulu University (GU) is a Ugandan university. As of September 2016, it was one of the country's nine public universities.


    Act 7 of the Ugandan Parliament, enacted in 2001, established GU. That Act was later amended by Act 3 of 2006. In September 2002, the university admitted its first students and began teaching.


    GU awarded degrees to 1,050 graduates, including 40 medical doctors, during the fifth annual graduation ceremony on January 23, 2010, the first graduating class of the Gulu University School of Medicine (with the help of the University of Naples Federico II). Thirteen students received a Master of Business Administration degree among the graduates.


    GU has three campuses as of October 2016:

    • The main campus is about 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) by road northeast of Gulu's central business district, the largest city in Uganda's Northern Region. This is about 333 kilometers (207 miles) north of Kampala, Uganda's capital and largest city.
    • The second campus is in Kitgum, about 104 kilometers (65 miles) northeast of Gulu, close to the international border with South Sudan. In 2011, that campus became operational.
    • In response to the Kingdom of Bunyoro's request, the university established a campus in Hoima, offering agriculture, the environment, computer science, information technology, business studies, accounting, and education.

    Uganda Martyrs University

    The eighth famous university in Top 10 Best Universities in Uganda that Toplist wants to introduce to you is Uganda Martyrs University. Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) is a private university in Uganda that is affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church. The Episcopal Conference of the Catholic Bishops of Uganda owns the university. The Uganda National Council for Higher Education has granted it a license.


    The University of Manitoba has seven faculties, two institutes, six campuses, nine departments, and three schools. Total student enrollment is 4,632 as of March 2022. Approximately 1,500 of these students were residential, while nearly 3,000 were enrolled in UMU's distance learning programs. The total number of employees was over 400.


    UMU was founded in 1993 with 84 students and two academic departments: the Institute of Ethics and Development Studies and the Faculty of Business Administration and Management.


    On November 8, 2018, 2040 candidates graduated with certificates, diplomas, bachelors, masters, and doctoral degrees at the university's 24th graduation ceremony. The vice chancellor informed those present that 17 new courses, including the Bachelor of Journalism and the Bachelor of Inclusive Education, had been added, bringing the total number of courses available to 136. A new Faculty of Engineering has also been established on the Fort Portal campus in Western Uganda.


    UMU's main campus is located in Nkozi, Mpigi District, in Uganda's Central Region, about 85 kilometers (53 miles) by road southwest of Kampala, the country's capital and largest city. This campus's coordinates are 0°00'13.0"N, 32°00'52.0" E. (Latitude:0.003611; Longitude:32.014444).

  9. The Islamic University of Uganda (IUIU) is a multi-campus university that offers certificate, diploma, undergraduate, and postgraduate programs. The university's main campus is in Mbale, Uganda, about 222 kilometers (138 miles) northeast of Kampala, Uganda's capital and largest city.


    The idea for IUIU emerged during the second summit of the Organization of the Islamic Conference in 1974. The university opened its doors in February 1988 with 80 students. The university's main goal is to meet the higher education needs of the English-speaking Muslim community in Southern and Eastern Africa. Non-Muslim students are also admitted to the university and are free to practice their respective religions.


    IUIU had four campuses as of December 2014:

    Kabale University

    Kabale University (KAB) is a Ugandan public university. Kabale University (KAB) was founded as a private institution in 2001 by stakeholders in the Kigezi sub-region, according to Education News Uganda. KAB's main goal is to contribute to the socioeconomic development of Kigezi, Uganda, East Africa, Eastern Africa, and Africa through accessible training, research, and decentralized service delivery, all while employing participatory and inclusive approaches and methodologies. In 2005, the Uganda National Council for Higher Education accredited KAB.


    Following stakeholder lobbying, the Ugandan government indicated its willingness to take over the private university in January 2015, subject to certain conditions being met. The university was formally taken over by the government in June 2015.


    KAB's main campus is on Kikungiri Hill in Kabale Municipality, on 52 hectares (130 acres) of land donated by the Kabale District Administration. This location is 1 kilometer (0.62 mi) off the Kabale-Gatuna Road, about 409 kilometers (254 mi) southwest of Kampala, Uganda's capital and largest city.
