Steiff is a plush toy maker based in Germany. Margarete Steiff, a seamstress, founded the company in 1880. The toys started out as elephants, which Steiff found in a magazine and sold to her customers as pincushions. Children began to play with them, and she went on to make many additional animal-themed toys for children, including dogs, cats, and pigs, in the years that followed. She created the majority of the prototypes herself.
Richard Steiff, Steiff's nephew, joined the company in 1897 and gave it a huge boost by manufacturing stuffed creatures based on zoo drawings. After the "Teddy" bear craze began showing a cartoon with President Roosevelt and a young cub, a buyer in America placed a 3000 piece order in 1903. Steiff produced 974,000 bears by 1907 and has continued to increase its output ever since.
Steiff's popularity grew and, after a few years, became a household name.
