Man of Will is based on the actual biography of a Korean nationalist leader who lived during the Joseon Dynasty. He was born Kim Chang and eventually changed his name to Kim Koo. Kim Chang So (Song Seung-heon) was imprisoned in the 1890s on suspicion of murdering a Japanese man engaged in the assassination of Empress Myeongseong.
From within the prison walls, he watched many impoverished and illiterate inmates being wrongfully punished. Kim then began training them to write and submit letters in order to clear up the false allegations.
