  1. The Republic Square is located in the heart of Yerevan and is one of the capital's most stunning and well-known attractions. Also called “the heart of Yerevan,” it is a favorite destination for both locals and tourists. The square was built in 1924 by the famous Armenian architect Alexander Tamanyan and continued until 1958. Every leaning structure was dismantled and rebuilt with new ones. These structures exemplified the finest of national and international architecture and its form is a simple mix of an oval and a trapeze.

At the moment, the Republic Square holds some of the most significant state concerts, with people coming from all around Armenia not only to enjoy the music but also to view the magnificent square.

Not far from the square, there are several cafés and eateries. "Marco Polo," "Jazzve," "Square One," "Diamond," and "Ararat" are among the most well-known. The "Noyan Tapan" shop, located just in front of the Square, sells a wide variety of books, textbooks, cards, and souvenirs. There are several clothing boutiques, souvenir shops, and other shops that may be of interest to travelers on both Western Avenue and Abovyan Street.

  2. The Zoravor Surp Astvatsatsin Church is one of Yerevan's oldest intact churches. It is situated in the city's oldest section, known as the Shahar district. Saint Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God) was the church's previous name. The name "Zoravor" (meaning "Powerful") was added since the church housed Zoravor's 13th-century bible.

The monastery was established in the first half of the 17th century by monk Movses Syunetsi with financial assistance from benefactors. The complex includes the Holy Mother of God Church and the chapel of St. Anania. Later, a monastic school was erected to the structure. Unfortunately, the freshly constructed monastic complex did not last long and was destroyed by the devastating earthquake in 1679. Only the chapel survived.

The current Saint Zoravor Astvatsatsin Church was built in the same location as the former monastery in 1693-1694. The church was built because to the generosity of Khoja Panos, one of Yerevan's wealthiest people. According to an inscription recorded 100 years after its construction, the church was renovated by Gabriel Haryurapet.

The church is a three-nave basilica with no dome. The main altar is to the east of the prayer hall, with sacristies in the northern and southern corners. The church's interior and external architecture is distinguished by its rigorous simplicity. Khachkars from the 17th century are built into the church's outer walls.

  3. The Yerevan Cascade is a massive stairway in the city center and it is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Yerevan. The gigantic construction links the city center to the upper parts of Yerevan, including Victory Park, Arabkir, and Kanaker-Zeytun.

The Cascade has 572 steps and a total elevation change of 118 meters from the foot of the staircase to the top - to the Memorial of the 50th Anniversary of Soviet Armenia. This is one of the most stunning structures in Yerevan and an excellent example of Soviet architecture!

The Cafesjian Center for the Arts is without a doubt the Cascade's major attraction. There are about 5000 paintings, mostly from Gerard Cafesjian's collection, making it the greatest modern art museum in Yerevan. Only a portion of the collection is housed in the paid museum; many pieces may be seen throughout the Cascade, including on the escalator, the stairs, and the park at the complex's base.

The view of the city from the top parts of the complex is perhaps the best in Yerevan. Visitors can climb the stairs to see sweeping panoramas, rest in one of the lovely gardens, browse the halls of the great art museum, or meander among the outdoor sculptures that adorn this attraction

  4. One of the most modern monuments of Armenian architecture, Matenadaran rises on the slope of one of Yerevan's picturesque hills, on the northern outskirts of Mesrop Mashtots Avenue. It is a unique research institute of ancient manuscripts, where ancient treasures of Armenian spiritual culture are preserved and studied.

Matenadaran has been around for almost a century. A manuscript repository was established in Echmiadzin as early as the 5th century, on the basis of which the current Matenadaran began to grow in the future. Matenadaran is a "repository of manuscripts" in the ancient Armenian language. Prior to the development of printing, Armenians, like many other nations, used to write books by hand and referred to them as manuscripts.

The gathering of Armenian manuscripts from around the world is still going on today. Every year, more manuscripts and documents are added to the Matenadaran collection. Matenadaran Fund currently houses around 23,000 old Armenian manuscripts as well as several thousand manuscripts in Russian, Arabic, Persian, and other languages. In addition to manuscripts, Matenadaran is rich in old-printed books, which have artistic significance due to their exquisite decorating and precious stones.

Matenadaran has become a prominent cultural and scientific center of international significance as a result of its treasures, attracting a lot of specialists and tourists from many nations across the world who visit and use its extensive materials for their research. Matenadaran is Armenia's national pride, a visible and eloquent witness to the Armenian people's creative thinking.

  5. Saint Gregory the Illuminator Cathedral, designed by architect Stepan Kurkchyan, is the world's largest Armenian church. It is a massive structure comprised of three churches: the Cathedral or Main Church, which has 1700 seats, the Chapels of St. King Tiridates and St. Ashkhen the Queen, all of which have 150 seats.

This beautiful cathedral, which was built in 2001, stands tall above Republic Square and is dedicated to Armenia's patron saint, who was responsible for bringing Armenia to Christianity in the 4th century AD. The church's interior is richly decorated with frescoes and paintings showing scenes from biblical texts as well as Armenian folk tales.

The bell tower has over 30 arches. Together with the court, the belfry can be found at the entrance of the Main Church. The main Church's lower floor contains spaces for both receptions and church-related activities. The cathedral has an area of around 3822 square meters (41,139 ft2). The distance between the ground and the top of the cross is 54 meters (177 feet).

The cathedral is situated on a high point so it can be viewed from various parts of the city. Beautifully built staircases lead to the cathedral's entrance. The statue of Zoravar Andranik (zoravar - a military leader in Armenian) has been on the left side of the stairs since 2002.

  6. Another wonder of Armenian architecture is the Alexander Spendiaryan - named Armenian National Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet. Located in the centre of Yerevan, this structure is another masterpiece of Alexander Tamanyan, who was given the Grand Prize at the World Exhibition in Paris. It is regarded as a symbol of music culture, conveyed via architectural beauty and classic grandeur.

On January 20, 1933, the Theatre of Opera and Ballet formally opened its doors. The structure is round in shape. It has two performance halls: the Aram Khachaturian concert hall, which seats 1,400 people, and the Aleksandr Spendarian Opera and Ballet National Theatre, which seats 1,200 people.

In front of the Theatre of Opera and Ballet is a circle square named "Azatutyun" (Freedom). Here you can find sculptures of Armenian famous poet Hovhannes Tumanian and composer Aleksandr Spendarian. The Freedom Square is a popular destination for both locals and visitors to the city because it is not only a cultural center and an impressive architectural monument, but it is also a nice area to promenade and enjoy the city's quiet ambiance.

  7. Vernissage is one of the must-see attractions in Yerevan and Armenia. In fact, no trip to Armenia would be complete without a visit to this spectacular open-air market. It all started in the 1980s, when a group of local painters began displaying their work outside the art institute on Buzand Street. Today, it's a massive indoor-outdoor market with everything for everyone.

If you're looking for anything from meat grinders to books, paintings, beakers, jewelry, carpets, and more, this is the place to go. Vernissage sells everything from fashionable items to traditional Armenian handicrafts and this is the place to go if you appreciate bargain shopping and haggling!

Carpets are given special attention in Vernissage as a vibrant part of Armenian national culture. The variety of colors, designs, and embellishments of self-woven carpets created by the hands of skilled craftswomen will make your head spin. Carpet weaving has been a traditional craft of the Armenian people since antiquity. Most Armenians have a national colorful carpet in their homes as a symbol of the nation's ability and hard work.

Those looking to fill their homes with exquisite items will appreciate the intricate paintings and original clocks of various shapes, pottery jugs, culinary utensils, irons, and horseshoes dating back more than three centuries. Vernissage has been open seven days a week in recent years, with Monday being the quietest day. To be honest, most of the stalls are closed on weekdays, but if you're searching for a good deal and know your favorite vendor will be there, go on those days.

  8. Victory Park is a popular destination for people of all ages in Yerevan. There are many exciting things to do and see here for you in order to enjoy the bustling atmosphere.

One of them is Mother Armenia which is dedicated to the victory of World War 2. The statue was considered a brilliant work of art by the sculptor Sergei Merkurov, with the pedestal created by architect Raphael Israelyan. The statue may be seen from nearly every corner of the city. Furthermore, it appears like Mother Armenia is watching over all Armenians. Mother Armenia is the female personification of Armenia, who is always ready to protect its people. It represents both peace and power. Every May 9th, thousands of people pay their respects to the slain Armenians by passing by the Mother Armenia statue.

The free Military History Museum is located within Mother Armenia's base and is divided into two sections: World War II and the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, which is obviously told from an Armenian perspective. The park is a peaceful area to go for a walk and unwind. There is also a small man-made pond and a couple carousels, at least one of which is popular with both children and adults.

  9. Since 301 AD, when Armenia became the first nation to adopt Christianity as its official religion, the vast majority of Armenians have worshiped the same god. Yerevan now is extraordinarily varied, with Jews, Yazidis, Kurds, and Syrian Muslims all residing in the city.

The Blue Mosque, built in the 18th century, was the largest of Yerevan's eight mosques and is the last extant Islamic site of worship in Armenia today. One of the most popular Yerevan attractions, it is mostly used by the city's Iranian community and embassy workers.

In a show of good faith, the mosque was leased to the Iranian Embassy in Yerevan in 2015. The turquoise, indigo, and butter-yellow mosaics on the facade and outer dome have been repaired and can now be seen from the green gardens in front. Don't overlook the ornately decorated entrance that faces the road.

The mosque also serves as a cultural center, with classes in Farsi available. When prayers are not in session, it is possible to go inside, although suitable attire (including a head covering for women) is necessary. The Blue Mosque symbolizes Armenia's friendly connection with neighboring Iran. The two nations have a visa-free travel agreement, and Iran has permitted Armenia to keep some Apostolic churches located within the borders of the Islamic Republic.

  10. The Yerevan Botanical Garden is a lovely and relaxing destination for a lengthy walk. The garden is located on 90 hectares of land in the higher northeastern section of the city, along the motorway Yerevan-Sevan, between the neighborhoods Nork and Zeitoun. The garden's setting corresponds to the rocky sagebrush semi-desert foothills that surround the Ararat valley.

The Botanical Garden has a large herbarium as well as a collection of trees and shrubs, which contains about 1070 species, varieties, and garden forms, as well as rare flora from the Caucasus and Cyprus, North America, Europe, Siberia, and East Asia. The collection of Armenian flora also includes roughly 200 species of endemic, uncommon, and declining plant species, and it serves as a foundation for research into Armenian flora and species' ecological interactions in a relatively natural habitat. An inexperienced observer can identify oak and Crimean pine, North American tulip tree, Polish larch, and Manchurian walnut.

Around 1000 species of woody and herbaceous plants are thriving in the greenhouse collection. A sturdy old "Grape" type liana and feijoa with gorgeous silvery-red blossoms in spring and tasty aromatic fruit are flourishing here. Different species of flowering orchids from Japan and China, Mexico, and the Himalayas also delight visitors with their distinctive shapes and flavors.
