Aare Gorge
The Aare Valley is a small gorge formed by the Aar River as it flows through a limestone mountain near the Swiss town of Meiringen. The canyon was formed about 10,000 years ago when water from melting glaciers eroded the limestone rocks, forming a narrow valley. The Aare River's flow has eroded the limestone for thousands of years, expanding the valley and giving the river water an eye-catching green tint. Aare Gorge's beauty is created by the green river wriggling through the steep rocky canyon and the unique way along the wall. When you look up, you can see limestone cliffs almost reach a height of 50 meters.
Since 1889, a small road built along the cliff has allowed people access to the canyon. However, before the tunnel, the only method to reach this gorge was by crossing the swift-flowing Aare River. That is why in the past, people referred to a journey to Aare Gorge as "not for the faint of heart". The spectacular splendor of the limestone mountains, the Aar river, and the winding route made Aare Gorge a popular tourist attraction for visitors from all over the world.
