About a Boy
About a Boy is a romantic comedy-drama film directed by Paul Weitz and Chris Weitz, with Peter Hedges co-writing the screenplay. It is based on Nick Hornby's novel of the same name, published in 1998. Hugh Grant plays Will, a wealthy, childless, and reckless Londoner in his thirties. He meets Marcus, an eccentric 12-year-old youngster with school troubles. Will and Marcus gradually become friends, and while Will teaches Marcus how to be a cool kid, Marcus also helps Will to finally grow up.
Universal Pictures released the film in theaters on April 26, 2002. It received an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. Hugh Grant and Toni Collette, respectively, were nominated for a Golden Globe and a BAFTA Award for their roles. The film received favorable critical reviews and grossed $130.5 million on a $30 million budget.
