Abune Yosef
The fifth one in Top 5 Highest Mountains in Ethiopia that Toplist would like to introduce to you is Abune Yosef. Abuna Yosef is a prominent Ethiopian Highlands mountain in the Lasta massif. It is the fifth tallest mountain in Ethiopia and the 19th highest in Africa, standing at 4,260 meters (13,976 feet). It is situated in the Amhara Region's Semien Wollo Zone. Ethiopian wolves, Gelada baboons, Erica arborea, Lobelia, and other afro-alpine vegetation can be found in the Abuna Yosef massif. The Abuna Yosef Community Conservation Area encompasses approximately 70 square kilometers of the Abuna Yosef massif.
The town of Wandatch (on the Kobo-Lalibela road) is the main entry point to the Abuna Yosef afro-alpine massif in the mountain range's eastern part. It is one of Ethiopia's highest towns, at 3500 meters above sea level. The towns of Muja, Kulmesq, and Lalibela are located on the massif's foothills.
The Church of Gennete Maryam, a monolithic church excavated during the reign of Yekuno Amlak, is a notable landmark on this mountain. There are also four free-standing churches built inside caves in the mountain, the oldest and most famous of which is Yemrehana Krestos Church, built by the same-named Zagwe king. Emakina Medhane Alem (probably built by Yekuno Amlak in the late 13th century), Lidetta Maryam, and Zammadu Maryam are the other three (probably 15th century). Lalibela's churches are located in its foothills.
