Ras Dashen
The first one in Top 5 Highest Mountains in Ethiopia that Toplist would like to introduce to you is Ras Dashen. Dashen, also known as Ras Dejen, is Ethiopia's highest peak and the fourteenth highest peak in Africa. It is located in the Simien Mountains National Park in the Amhara Region and has a height of 4,550 meters (14,930 ft).
The English name "Ras Dashen" is a corruption of the Amharic name "Ras Dejen," which refers to the traditional head or general who fights in front of the Emperor and is used by the Ethiopian Mapping Authority (EMA).
Ras Dashen is the eastern peak of the rim of "an enormous volcano, the northern half of which is cut down about thousand metres by numerous ravines draining into the Takkazzi River," according to Erik Nilsson. Mount Biuat (4,510 meters) is its western counterpart, separated by the Meshaha river valley. The mountain frequently experiences violent snowfalls at night, but because day and night temperatures vary greatly, the snow is almost completely melted in a few hours (during the hottest period of the year), as the temperature can reach 5 degrees Celsius by midday. Snow falls rarely in winter because the majority of Ethiopia's yearly rainfall falls in the summer, but when it does, it usually lasts for weeks or months.
The French officers Ferret and Galinier made the first recorded ascent by a Eurasian in 1841. There is no verifiable evidence of previous ascents by locals, but the summit climate and conditions are relatively hospitable, and high altitude pastoral settlements are nearby. At around 4,300 metres SRTM data, a small fort is still partially standing.
