Ace Hotel
The Ace Hotel, located in the middle of South Broadway, makes it simple to explore Downtown Los Angeles' many hidden attractions, including speakeasy-style cocktail bars and chic eateries that are now Instagram celebrities in their own right. Watch out for the 7th Street Metro Center, a significant transportation hub that connects to Koreatown and Union Station.
The Ace Hotel, which features two bars, a New American restaurant, and a lobby coffee shop as its public offerings, is aimed at night owls, artists, and musicians. Although its inhabitants are likely to pay more attention to the cocktail menu than the Spanish-Gothic elements in the masonry, the spectacular 1920s building lends cultural cred.
Don't undervalue the rich past of this bustling hipster hangout: the United Artists theater, a 1,600-seat Spanish-Gothic Revival masterpiece next to the Ace Hotel lobby, is housed in the once-tallest building in Los Angeles (if only for a year) in 1927. It is also the crown jewel of LA's emerging Broadway Theatre District. The opulent former movie palace has been updated with contemporary digital projection and a cinema sound system; a similar thing has happened in the rooms, which still bear visible signs of their 1930s heyday (rough concrete, boxy layout), but have also been given millennial touches like Navajo blankets and white subway tile bathrooms. With additional area to spread out on the floor with a guitar (many rooms have acoustic Martin guitars hanging on the wall) or do some in-room yoga, it truly is an artist's loft. After a lively evening on the hotel's rooftop, a favorite hangout for zingy cocktails, DJ events, and dazzling views of the DTLA cityscape, the purposefully empty rooms can be a welcome retreat.
