Anne Hathaway, one of the most famous Hollywood actressesan actress, comes from Philadelphia. She has English, German, and French ancestry, but her primary heritage is Irish. She had her first significant role in the short-lived television series Get Real (1999). She rose to fame as a little girl who finds she is a member of royalty in Diary of a Princess (2001) and its 2004 sequel, alongside Julie Andrews and Heather Matarazzo.
Hathaway, a former prominent soprano in New York, was mentioned as a leading candidate for the part of "Christine" in The Phantom of the Opera (2004). Due to schedule issues with Diary of Princess 2: The Royal Wedding (2004), she could not accept the part, which was subsequently awarded to newbie Emmy Rossum.
Hathaway soon starts to move away from family-friendly films.
