Nicole Kidman
Elegant Nicole Kidman was really born in Honolulu, Hawaii, when her Australian parents were there on school visas, making her one of Hollywood's top Australian imports.
For Kidman, the family has always come first. Nicole Kidman and her younger sister, Antonia Kidman, were raised by social activists (their father supported labor rights, and their mother was a feminist); they participated in their parents' political efforts by handing out flyers on street corners. To physically treat her mother, who finally overcame breast cancer, 17-year-old Nicole quit her job and enrolled in a massage course.
Kidman is the daughter of Antony David Kidman, a scientist and clinical psychologist, and Janelle Ann (Glenny), a nursing teacher. Nicole was originally drawn to ballet as a young child. Still, she also developed an interest in mime and acting (her theatrical debut was as a bleating sheep in an elementary school Christmas performance).
While her peers went out to enjoy themselves in the sun, the fair-skinned Kidman fled to dim rehearsal rooms to hone her trade. During her adolescent years, acting displaced other art forms and evolved into a haven. She frequently worked at the Philip Street Theater, where she once got a handwritten note of appreciation and inspiration from a viewer named Jane Campion (then a film student). Kidman finally quit high school to focus solely on her acting career. At 16, she made her film debut in the 1983 Australian holiday classic Bush Christmas.
