Austrian Airways

Austrian Airlines AG, commonly abbreviated as Austrian, is Austria's flag carrier and a subsidiary of the Lufthansa Group. The airline's headquarters are located on the grounds of Vienna International Airport in Schwechat, where it also has a hub. As of July 2016, the airline served six domestic routes and over 120 foreign year-round and seasonal destinations in 55 countries. It is a member of the Star Alliance.

The airline was formed in 1957 by the merger of Air Austria and Austrian Airways, but its history dates back to 1923, when Austrian Airways was founded. It was a state-owned enterprise for the majority of its existence. The airline began scheduled service on March 31, 1958, flying a leased Vickers Viscount from Vienna to Zurich and London; it later bought its own Viscount fleet. Austrian ordered its first jet-powered aircraft, the Sud Aviation Caravelle, on February 18, 1963. Following that, it added several versions and modifications of the Douglas DC-9 airliner; by the end of 1971, Austrian had become an all-jet operator. It added the DC-9-80, also known as the McDonnell Douglas MD-80, to its fleet in the 1980s.
