This film was released in October 2014 as Avengers: Infinity War - Part 1. The Russo brothers took on the role in April 2015, and a month later Markus and McFeely signed a contract to write a film inspired by Jim Starlin's 1991 Infinity Gauntlet and Jonathan Hickman's 2013 comic book. In 2016, Marvel shortened the title to Avengers: Infinity War. Filming began in January 2017 at the Studios in Pinewood, Atlanta, Fayette County, Georgia, with a large cast composed mainly of actors reinstating roles in previous MCU films, including Brolin as Thanos. Production continued until July 2017, when the direct sequel, Avengers: Endgame (2019) was filmed. Additional filming took place in Scotland, downtown Atlanta and New York. With an estimated budget of $325 million to $4 million, the film is one of the most expensive films ever made.
Avengers: Infinity War premiered in Los Angeles on April 23, 2018, and was released in the United States on April 27 as part of MCU Phase 3. The film has been praised for Brolin's acting, visuals, action sequences, and emotional weight, but has been criticized for relying on previous MCU films for its story. It became the fourth film and the first superhero film to gross over $2 billion worldwide, breaking numerous box office records and becoming the highest-grossing film of 2018, as well as the fourth-highest-grossing film worldwide and in the United States and Canada. The film's visual effects were nominated for the 91st Academy Awards, the 24th Critics' Choice Awards and the 72nd British Academy Film Awards.
